About Kung-fu Schools
Friendly & Approachable
Imagine this: it is your first day at a martial arts school, you do not know what to expect, and you’ve just walked into the reception area. We understand how intimidating that could be. After all, we have all experienced it before, and we never forget that.
That is why our staff and students are all friendly and approachable, and we pride ourselves in our relaxed, upbeat classes.
Kung Fu Schools Croydon is a full-time school dedicated to providing the best martial arts and self-defence training available. Located in a business park in South Croydon with ample free parking spaces, our accessibility means that we have students coming from all over south London and Surrey.
Kung Fu Schools is the only martial arts organisation outside of China to be named a “Confucius Classroom” by our sister organisation, the Confucius Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The title recognises centres that actively promote health and wellbeing via Chinese culture and tradition. We work closely with the Confucius Institute, including running Mandarin Chinese lessons for our children, and Chinese wellbeing workshops for our adults, both run by dedicated teachers from the Confucius Institute at London South Bank University. Students from the school have appeared with Confucius Institute performers in various public demonstrations. Because of our close relations, our Head Instructor, Sifu Alan Paterson, has had the honour of meeting the Chinese ambassador to the UK.
Sifu Alan Paterson (3rd Degree) heads a team of friendly and experienced instructors, including Si Je Jin Choong (2nd Degree), Si Hing Keith Monk (1st Degree), Si Hing Nick Martin (1st Degree), Si Hing Charlie Fox, Si Hing Nick Brace and children’s instructor Si Je Jo Harding, as well as an ever-expanding team of trainee instructors. Each one of our instructors are qualified to teach children, are CRB-checked and hold Instructor Indemnity Insurance for added peace of mind, and we hold weekly instructor meetings to ensure that each instructor is well-prepared to deliver the latest curriculum to students.

At Kung Fu Schools, we make it our mission to guide each and every one of our students towards their Black Belt (1st Degree) and beyond!
Sifu Alan Paterson
Head Instructor Sifu Alan Paterson has several years’ experience in various martial arts, including Judo and Jiu-jitsu, before finding what he was looking for in Yip Man Wing Chun.
After training for many years under the Leung Ting Wing Tsun system under Grand Master Keith R. Kernspecht, Sifu Alan gained his 1st Degree, and spent 12 years teaching Wing Chun and running satellite schools around Sutton and Redhill before he established Kung Fu Schools in today’s professional locations. He also has a close relationship with Total Care Security.
He trains regularly with the Chief Instructor of the Kung Fu Schools Organisation, Master Paul Hawkes (5th Degree). He also works closely with our sister organisation, the IWKA, run by Grand Master Sergio Iadarola, and he travels frequently to train at various international locations, including Hong Kong, Germany, Holland, Italy and Austria.
Advance At Your Own Pace

Likewise, we understand that everyone progresses at a different rate. After all, mastering a martial art requires lifelong learning. By teaching according to an individual’s skill and knowledge, adapting approaches as necessary, we endeavour to get you to become the best you can be.
Whatever your personal goals, we aim to help you achieve it!
